When You Should Play to Win

Question: In keeping the laws of Taharas Hamishpachah, are a husband and wife allowed to play tennis or ping pong during the period of separation?

Thank you for your interesting question. This exact question is discussed by Rabbi Moshe Stern, ob”m (see his responsa Be’er Moshe Vol. 1 Ch. 50, and Vol. 2 Ch. 67). He rules that this is permitted. However, this is only if husband and wife are playing against each other to win, and not merely volleying the ball. Since we have a law that they may not throw something directly to each other during the period of separation, volleying the ball is like throwing to one another. If they are playing to win, they are hitting the ball away from each other, and this is permitted!

Rabbi Stern acknowledges that there are authorities who are of the opinion that it is preferable not to play these games during this time. However, he feels strongly that there is no reason to forbid this type of game during this time.

Take care,

Rabbi Aaron Tendler
