A Definition of God

Question: Do you believe that God is more like a process rather than an actual being?

Answer: According to the Talmud, G-d is primal, undifferentiated existence out of which all differentiated existence emerged. The existence that emerged from “Him” is completely dependent on “His” existence. Since the existence which emerged from “Him” has produced a species capable of what we call “consciousness,” it must mean that Primal Existence is conscious.

What you are suggesting is correct in the sense that the development of our universe into a completely recognizable expression of the Primal Existence from which it emerged is a long process that spans all of history. In fact, the Torah calls this historical process the “Path of G-d” (Genesis 18:19). This is because God’s “Name” (that is, His expression in our universe) gradually becomes whole through this process.

I hope this answers your question.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Ari Lobel
