Single Women

Are there any special requirements for single women? Should un-married women in their early thirties be doing something extra as we don’t have family or child obligations?

This is a very interesting question. The truth is, that of the three special commandments for women, two of them have nothing to do with marriage. They are lighting the Shabbos candles, and separating challah from dough. Certainly it would be proper to give time and energy to those two commandments. If you would like some sources for laws pertaining to these two commandments, the Radiance of Shabbos, by Rabbi Cohen, published by Artscroll, is an excellent source for laws of candle lighting. The laws of challah, as well as many laws pertaining to a Jewish woman, can be found in a 2 volume set called Halichos bas Yisroel – A Woman’s guide to Jewish Observance, by Rabbi Fuchs, published by Targum press.

Succes in everything,
