Maimonides

Why were the Jewish Scholars concerned about Maimonides’s producing the “Mishna Torah”.?

The greatest fear was that studying Mishna Torah might weaken the all-important focus on the study of the Talmud (which is, after all, the source of all observance of Jewish Law). If all Jews know is the “dry” halachic decisions of a compendium like the Maimonides, then proper and profound Torah knowledge could be lost. In the end (perhaps ironically), there have been few works in Jewish history that have inspired more intensive Talmud study than Mishna Torah!

Rabbi Boruch Clinton
