Working on the Sabbath

Dear Rabbi,
In today’s life, most jobs require working on weekend. A job such as policeman, doctors, nurses, pharmacists (medical field), soldiers, is almost a necessities to work over weekend. What should we do. I, myself, flatly refused to work on Fridays, but Saturday (after 2 pm), I am required to go to work. I feel bad, especially, recently I was reading the ten commands and I feel really guilty. This is the word of our G-d that we should keep it holy. However, what should we do, and what we do in Israel? please advise.

From sundown Friday until sundown Saturday we are meant to do no work. Earlier on Friday, it is fine.

You might want to speak with your employer about accomodating your work schedule for your religious beliefs. Years ago it was very difficult to find employment if one was a Jewish Sabbath observer. Today, however, there are laws that require employers, in many cases to do what they can to accomodate you. You may wish to speak with your rabbi or a lawyer who is an expert in these issues, if your employer says that he cannot work your schedule around your religious beliefs.
