Pornography

Question: On the radio today, Dr. Laura had a call from a woman whose husband “occasionally” views pornography. This woman has been married 30 years to the same man, and has two adult children. Dr. Laura was shocked that this woman found this behavior disturbing, and said something like, “All men view pornography. It’s what they do.” My question: In the Orthodox Jewish religion, is this considered to be moral or immoral behavior for a man (married or not) to view pornography? I would like to know if there is any official teaching on this.

Answer: Thank you for your question.I did not hear the show and cannot speak pro or con what Dr. Laura said. However, in my opinion, and I venture to say it is the consensus of my colleagues, there are two answers:

1. She is right that this is a natural tendency of men.
2. You are right that this is immoral behavior.

The Almighty gave us certain natural tendencies not to follow but to master. A man’s challenge in a marriage is to take that male energy and focus it on one woman. It’s difficult, but everything worthwhile takes effort.

Thanks again for your question,
