I just want to know where the name Zeira comes from I have been reading about a Rab Zeira .Can you give me any information to where the name originated from, the meaning of his name?
The most famous Zeira was the great Rabbi Zeira mentioned many times in the Talmud. Rabbi Zeira lived sometime between 300-350 CE during the time of the Amoraim. The Amoriam are the Rabbis who authored the Gemara (the explanation and elucidation of the Mishna). The period of the Amoraim lasted between about 200 CE (the completion of the Mishna) and 500 CE (the completion of the Gemara).
The name Zeira iteself is derived from the Aramaic word ze’er meaning “small or diminutive”. The “diminutive” theme finds itself in the names of several other Talmudic Rabbis (most notably Rabbi Shmuel Hakattan, Rabbi Shmuel “the small one”). These “small” names (like Rabbi Zeira’s) have a couple of connotations:
a) A form of humility
b) A sense of association with the Jewish people as a whole. G-d told the Jewish people (Deut. 6:7) “Not because you are great in number did G-d choose you; for you are small in number”. The Jewish people’s destiny has and always will be, to be small in number, oppressed among the nations. Through his name, Rabbi Zeira is connected to that destiny.
Be well,
Rabbi Yoel Spotts
