The Sabbath and Time

Question

Dear Rabbi, i was wondering what is the importance of Sabbath, and how is this holiday based on time not on space. If possilbe please let me know specific places where this information is mentioned. Thank You.

Answer

Thank you for your question. Shabbat is a central foundation of Jewish life and I encourage you to continue exploring it, and more importantly, doing your best to observe it. Your intellectual awe of the concept of Shabbat will only be surpassed by the peace and comfort your soul feels when you experience a true Shabbat.

Regarding your question, there are many sources which discuss Shabbat. I suggest going to www.artscroll.com and www.feldheim.com and looking for books on Shabbat. Two that come to mind are The Sabbath by Rabbi Grunfeld, and a book on Shabbat by Lori Palatnik. Also, you can find many article on shabbat on the internet, eg at www.torah.org, www.ohr.edu and www.aish.com. Here is an article I found at www.aish.com which particularly deals with the issue of time.

Good luck with your continued spiritual search.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Zev Kahn
