Fated to Suffer

Question

Do you believe that there are people whose lives are meant to be only about suffering? And why would G-d make someone beautiful, talented and intelligent, only to take every opportunity away from them, even though they have so much going for them and they have tried everything to overcome?

Answer

I sense that you are asking a very personal question about someone close to you, which I cannot possibly answer. However it is clear from the Jewish sources that everyone has free choice to decide how to live their life. They cannot choose whether it will be in poverty or wealth, illness or health, but they can choose to make the most of the gifts and abilities that G-d has given them and use them to serve G-d, themselves and the world in the best possible way.

There are some people who have debilitating illnesses (mental, physical or emotional) which prevent them from living up to their potential. These people should be encouraged to get help from wherever is the most appropriate source to enable them to live a successful and fulfilled life.

Of course, this answer doesn’t take into account the age old question of the book of Job. He was someone whose life was about suffering, and that is probably the most difficult book of the Bible to understand, because it seems to contradict every other principle of the way that G-d runs the world.

I hope this answer helps, and wish you success in helping others to achieve their potential.

Regards,
Rabbi David Sedley
