Can you explain to me the Jewish custom of “casting lots?” I have heard it explained as anything from voting, to rolling dice. I have also found that it may have something to do with an allotment of smooth stones. Can you clear this up for me please?

Casting lots is more like drawing names from a hat to see who has been chosen. Haman did this in the Book of Esther to decide which month was best for his nefarious plan. Joshua did this to uncover the perpetrator of the theft of booty from Jericho.
