Jews and Baptism

Question

Hi,
I am wondering if Jews practice any kind of baptism today?

Thank you

Answer

Baptism derives from the Jewish Mikvah, immersion in a pool of natural water. Men immerse themselves before major holidays and women do so after their menses. Immersion is also a requirement for conversion of both men and women. Since an unmarried woman is expected not to engage in sexual relations she does not immerse until the day before her wedding.

Follow-up question

Question

Does a swimming pool consitute a mikvah if it has clorine used to kill bateria. Also if it is feed by rain water or well water, does that mean it has living water?

Answer

Thank you for your question. A swimming pool may not be used as a Mikvah for a woman or for someone undergoing a conversion. Rain water and well water do not help in this matter.Take care,
