I am fourteen years old and i don’t have a religous identity. I am adopted and my adoptive father is Catholic while my adoptive mother is a Presbydarian. I do not know what my mother’s religon was but I think it was Jewish, however i am not 100% sure and being a Christian all my life I want to convert. But I live two hours away from the nearest synogoue. How do I convert?
To become Jewish it is not enough not to want to be a Christian. One must want very much to be a Jew because one believes that Judaism offers a unique path to G’d that satisfies one’s soul. Remember, though, that Judaism does not believe that one must be Jewish to get to Heaven. G’d has provided other paths for non-Jews. If you feel that your soul is yearning for something more spiritual and you are not finding it in Christianity then it might be a sign that you have a Jewish soul and you should reunite it with a Jewish body. The first step is to read some books on Judaism. Start with “To Be a Jew” by Rabbi Donin. Ask your local library to get a copy for you to read. Afterwards you should contact your nearest Orthodox rabbi. Perhaps you can correspond with him by email. But the Rabbi will not be willing to work with you unless he knows that you have your parents’ blessing to pursue Judaism. Otherwise, the rabbi would be coming between you and your parents and he wouldn’t want to do that. In that case you would have to wait until you are 18 and pursue your dreams independent of your parents.
You should also do what you can to determine whether your biological mother was Jewish. Because, if you are a Jew by virtue of your birth to a Jewish woman then it would be very important for the welfare of your soul that you conform your life to Jewish practice.
Good luck.
