Mourning for Grandparents

Question

Are we forbidden to mourn for our grandparents?

Answer

We are not supposed to mourn excessively, but this doesn’t mean not being sad; it means that the specific laws of mourning, which forbid certain things for 7 or 30 days (or longer, for a parent) shouldn’t be prolonged beyond those periods of time. Similarly, we don’t mourn for a grandparent in the sense that we don’t keep the 7 and 30 days, but we can certainly express our sadness at the loss of grandparents in any way that makes us feel better about it.
