What can you tell me about the Tanna R. Eleazar?
R.Eleazar b.Shamua was one of R.Akiva's last disciples. He is referred to simply as "R.Eleazar" in the Tannaitic literature. He was one of the five famous disciples who were ordained by R.Yehudah b.Bava secretly when the Romans prohibited ordination. When the Sanhedrin reconvened in Usha after the persecution subsided, his name isn't mentioned; it's possible that he went to Netzivin (in Babylonia) to study with R.Yehudah b.Beseirah.
He had many students, including R.Yehudah ha-Nasi, compiler of the Mishnah. He is quoted (in Avos 4:12) as saying "The honor of your student should be as dear to you as your own". Rav called him "The best of the wise", and R.Yochanan said of him that his heart was as wide as a palace door. He attributed his long life to the fact that he had never treated people as inferior.
