The Laws of the Country

Question

Must a Jew obey his country’s laws?

Answer

The Rabbis recognize a country’s laws as binding on Jews who live in that country (see e.g., Talmud Gitin 10b), provided they are reasonable laws — not “evil” or unjust. The authority of a country’s government is recognized, provided it conducts itself rationally and justly. Establishing a system of laws and a judicial system is one of the seven Noahide Commandments.
