Secular Music

Question

What are your views on listening to secular music?

Answer

Rabbi Moshe Dovid Valley, the foremost student of the Ramcha”l (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato, author of many classic ethical works) discusses secular music in his commentary on Ecclesiastes. He says that a portion of music is frequently called a “movement.” The reason is because music moves you to a certain end. As you listen to music, a sense that penetrates to your very soul, it moves you to the ideals and feelings expressed by the composer as he wrote the music.

The question then, as you choose your musical tastes, is towards what do you wish to be moved?

All the Best,
