Shunning Sinners

Question

Should we shun a person who has sinned?

Answer

It would make sense for people to shun a person who was guilty of a KARESS offense, so he is “cut off from his people”; but in practice we shun only someone who has been put under a ban (CHEREM) by the Rabbis. Also, a person can be forgiven for a KARESS offense if he was flogged (see Talmud Makkos 13b).
