Question
What is the first commandment of the Ten commandments given to us by Moses? I was told by a friend that the current translation of the bible doesn’t have the actual first command. Is this true and what is it?
Answer
From the commentary of the Artscroll Stone edition of the Pentateuch:
First Commandment: To have faith in Gd’s existence, and that He is eternal and has complete and unfettered power.
Although stated as a simple fact rather than as an instruction to do something, virtually all the commentators reckon this as the positive commandment to believe in the existence of [our] Gd as the only Gd.
