Ask the Rabbi: answers from Project Genesis rabbis

Karaites

Question

Is there a particular denomination or sect of Jews which abides only by or strictly reads and studies the Torah (only the first 5 books of the Bible)?

Answer

Not that I am aware of. There is a small group known as the Karaites that practice their religion based upon their own literal reading of the Bible and do not follow the normative Jewish practice that is based on the Torah as taught by Moses and passed down through the rabbinic tradition. The progenitors of this group broke with rabbinic tradition during the second Temple period.
