Meaning Behind Injuries

Question

Is there significance to repeated injuries to a particular limb of the body? My right arm has had 4 serious injuries.

Answer

I’m afraid I’m not nearly insightful enough to provide a definitive response to your question. We do, of course, believe that the kind of events that you have described are hardly random, and that it is highly likely that they contain some message. But to pinpoint precisely what that message might be is beyond the range of most human beings.

I will however offer this thought: Judaism teaches that God often interferes with His human creations through the medium of “measure for measure” – i.e. Divine intervention will often take a form that is recognizably relevant to an individual’s personal activities. So, for instance, a sore throat could be traced to a recent incident of verbal abuse: Since you caused pain through the organs of speech, those organs might subsequently be used to hint to the error of such behavior. Therefore, when trying to make sense of events either good or bad, a general approach is to assess your recent use of that specific faculty or organ. And really, no one on earth is better qualified to properly analyze this matter than you.

One more suggestion: You have obviously had the opportunity to think quite deeply about this strange and painful series of events – to the point where you are seeking to place it into some kind of understandable spiritual framework. Perhaps it might be useful to actually discuss it with someone who is especially sensitive to what you’re experiencing, and who could hopefully help make some sense of it all.

I wish you the very greatest success in overcoming any pain and hardship imposed by your injuries, and in finding some meaning to them.

With my best regards,
