Is G-d Really a “He”?

Question

A very literate Jew I know continually refers to G-d as a “He”. Why not refer to G-d as a “She”?

Answer

G-d, being non-physical, is gender neutral (i.e. neither a “he” nor “she”). However, proper rules of grammatical etiquette employs the term “He.” Here is a gender example to make the point. A bus takes a bunch of boys and girls to the park. One of the children will be chosen as the group leader. He will be responsible for the rest of the children.

We don’t know whether that group leader will be a boy or a girl, yet, grammatically, the term “he” is employed — not “she” or “it.”
