Pre-destination

Question

What is the stand of Judaism on pre-destination? To me, accurate predictions by the Hebrew Prophets is a sign that everything good or bad was pre-destined by God.

Answer

G-d is not limited by time. In fact, God invented time when He created the Universe. Due to the fact that G-d is outside of time and not restricted thereby, He sees the future as clearly as He sees the past. It is as if G-d looks through time like we look through an aquarium.

That is how there can be prophesy. The prophets are given information that G-d knows will happen.

This is where the confusion comes in. People think that, because G-d knows what will happen, they have no free will, and that everything is predestined. That is not so.

Although G-d knows what a person will do, the person himself makes the choice and now G-d allows the person to act on it.
