During Egyptian plague of darkness did the Jews ransack Egyptian homes for gold/jewelry because G-d had said they would not leave Egypt poor, but rich? Isn’t this stealing?
During the plague of darkness the Jews did not ransack the Egyptian homes. According to the Midrash, they took inventory of the Egyptian valuables but did not actually take anything. Later when they were leaving Egypt they were able to identify to the Egyptians which items they wished to take. The Talmud relates that centuries later the Egyptians came to Alexander the Great and demanded compensation from the Jews for their plunder of Egypt. The Jews responded that they would willingly do so after Egypt paid the Jews for their years of slavery. Alexander accepted the Jews’ argument and the case was closed.
