I’m wondering about the source of the practice to turn away people three times before welcoming them into the conversion process.
Answer
The earliest source is in the book of Ruth where Naomi tries to dissuade Ruth from converting to Judaism. It is subsequently elaborated and developed in the 4th chapter of tractate Yevamos.
