Question
What is the significance of Wells in the Torah?
Answer
Wells are symbolic of something hidden beneath the surface, often internal. Therefore, when the Torah describes our Forefathers as digging wells, aside from the simple meaning, it is also an allegory for digging deeper in the psyche and confronting one’s internal struggles. If you think of it in these terms, you might come up with some interesting insights into why Abraham dug wells, Isaac re-dug the wells of his father, and Jacob uncovered a well in his first encounter with Rachel.
