Kosher Locusts

Question

What are the names of the kosher locusts or grasshoppers we can eat. Do any Jews in the world sell these items? Do companies sell these items in Israel or USA?

Answer

Interesting question! I’m sorry to disappoint you, but there isn’t much of an industry selling kosher locusts, presumably because there isn’t much of a market for it.

Another reason that eating these bugs isn’t so common is that the vast majority of Jewish communities have lost their mesorah (tradition) of what the “chagav” (the species of Kosher Locust) really is. Although we possess a basic description of what the chagav looked like, with thousands of species of locusts and grasshoppers buzzing and hopping around it’s impossible to identify the right one from our description. (The Talmud in Chulin describes the chagav as possessing four front legs, four wings which cover most of the length and circumference of its body, and two strong hind legs for hopping.)

There are a few Sephardic communities that still possess a tradition of exactly what the chagav is. (The Yemenite tradition is that it’s what scientists call the Schistocerca gregaria.) Generally speaking, however, Jews from other communities should rely on their own traditions (that the identity of the chagav is unknown) and not those of a community of which they are not a member.
