How does Jewish law approach the issue of price gouging?
Thank you for your question. Jewish law has a concept called Ona’ah, which basically means taking financial advantage of your customer. If someone engages in a transaction with you, they are entitled to believe that they are getting a fair deal, and if they are not, seller (or buyer) must explicitly tell them that the price being charged is not what they are expecting. Failure to disclose this to them is a Torah prohibition, just as if the person had stolen, and in many cases the transaction would be legally null and void, according to Jewish Law.
Take care,
