Torah Reading Assistance

Question

Is it permitted, when reading Torah, to glance back and forth at a Chumash (a vowelled text of the 5 books of the Torah) for accuracy, etc?

Answer

It is permissible, but not preferable as it will greatly delay the reading for the congregation. It would be better to split up the Torah portion amongst several of the participants so that each one can master his part without needing to reference the Chumash during the reading.
