Simchas Torah

Question

Is Simchas Torah “the rejoicing of the law”? Where does this come from?

Answer

Simchas Torah is indeed “rejoicing with the law.” It’s the holiday that takes place (in the Diaspora) on the day after Shmini Atzeres. Shmini Atzeres takes place immediately after the seven days of Sukkos (Tabernacles).

Simchat Torah is special since it is the day that we complete the yearly cycle of reading a portion of the Torah each week. The reason for rejoicing is because there is nothing more enjoyable than learning Torah (Jewish law). It’s G-d’s guidebook for life, and it’s a real spiritual thrill to delve into its insights.
