Suicide in the Torah

Question

What is the Jewish view on suicide? How does this differ from other people?

Answer

The Jewish view is that committing suicide is prohibited. The Torah states in Genesis 9:5, “I will surely take an account for [spilling] your own life’s blood.” One who takes his own life is said to have forfeited his portion in the World to Come. God gives us life and only He can take it away. Preempting that is tantamount to murder.

Our lives and bodies belong to G-d. They are on loan to us and we cannot damage borrowed goods. There are rare occasions when suicide might be allowed such as King Saul’s suicide to avoid the desecration of G-d’s Name that would have resulted had he been captured alive by the enemy.

I’m not quite sure if this differs from the views of other peoples. What I can say is that when God said the verse cited above He was addressing all of mankind.
