Question
What if anything does the Torah and/or commentators say about opening up the ark and counting the Torah as one of the ten men required for conducting services?
Answer
An opinion in the Talmud (Berachos 47b) suggests that 9 plus a Torah is acceptable, but the Talmud rejects that opinion.
In the Shulkhan Arukh, Orakh Chaim, Chapter 55, it brings two opinions: Those who say that a child can be counted for the tenth man, and those who say that nothing counts but ten adult men. There are different customs on which way to go on the issue. But you certainly need ten male Jews.
