Bar Mitzvah

Question

How important is having a Bar Mitzvah in the Jewish religion?

Answer

Unfortunately, most people in America have misunderstood what a Bar Mitvah is. The focus has become a big party where the boy receives many gifts. The truth is, that the Bar Mitvah is the time when the boy becomes obligated in fulfilling mitzvos. Since it is such a happy occasion, that the boy can now perform mitzvahs that he is obligated in, we celebrate!!

So a boy becomes a Bar Mitvah at the age of 13 with or without a celebration, or being called to the Torah. It has however become a tradition to have a celebration to signify this special event.
