Question
Did the Tribe of Levi have a banner or flag? If so, is it known what is looked like?
Answer
The tribe of Levi did indeed possess a flag (or banner). The Sages, however, do not include it among the 12 flags of the tribes. There were a total of 13 flags.
The Midrash expounds on the details of each tribe’s flag. Levi’s flag consisted of an emblem of the high priest’s breastplate (Chosen Mishpat), which represented the tribe’s priestly status. The colors of the flag were 1/3 white, 1/3 black, and 1/3 red.
