Before god created heaven and earth what was he doing?
Hi,
Thank you for your question. You are asking what G-d was doing before creation. This question assumes that there was such a thing as time before creation. It is almost impossible for humans to imagine what it would be like without the barriers of time. If it were to be true that there was no sun, solar system, or concept of relative time, as defined by Einstein’s theory of relativity, then there would be no past, present, or future. The fact is that there is relative time, but that was not always the case. Before “creation” there was no relative time. Therefore, to ask what G-d was doing before “Creation” makes no sense. Asking what He was doing is assuming a past existed. If no “past” existed, then you can’t ask what He was doing during a period of time that did not exist. G-d simply was, is, and always will be.
The truth is that from a Jewish perspective, G-d exists beyond time even now. Time is only a human limitation, created by G-d. He who created time does not have to exist within it. I know that this is a very deep concept, but when you understand these concepts the interaction between ourselves and G-d begins to make more sense. I hope this helps.
Be Well,
Rabbi Litt
