A Convert and a Levite

Question

I am an orthodox convert, I know that a convert can not marry a Kohain. I am confused because I was reading that all descendants of Ahron are levites and therefore all Levites are Kohains. Is this true and does that mean that I can not marry a levite? I have just been introduced to a man who is a Levite and am distressed now after reading this.

Answer

Your question is a good one, but relax. While all Kohanim and Levi’im are, in fact, from the house of Levi, the only prohibition is for a convert to marry someone from the line of Kohanim, which means that they descend from Aaron, specifically. Aaron was a descendant of Levi, so not all folks who are descendants of Levi are Kohanim, thereby making it permissible for you to marry a Levite.
