Yeshurun

Question

Would you please expound on the meaning, usage, etc.of the word Yeshurun. All I have been able to find is “an idealized Israel is called Yeshurun”.

The word “Yeshurun” is used throughout the Tanach, the Jewish bible as a name for the Jews. We are referred to as a few different names, but this one represents the honest, straight mindedness of our people. The word itself comes from the Hebrew word, “Yashar,” which means, “Straight.” The Jewish people have always been considered a people who follow the law and are straight, not bending when things get tough. Many synagogues assume this name. Some are called, “Bet or Beth Yeshurun,” which means the house of Yeshurun. Sometimes it is spelled with a “J” but that is not accurate in terms of its appropriate Hebrew pronunciation.
