Ask the Rabbi: answers from Project Genesis rabbis

Torah, which to study first

Question

What are all the Torahs? (example:midrash, tanach, zohar) What is the order of studying them? (example:first:midrash 2:zohar and so on.)

Answer

Torah (as in “THE” Torah) generally refers to the Five Books of Moses that are written on a Torah scroll–Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. However, if one would say “Let’s learn some Torah!”, they may be referring to the Torah, Prophets, Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, Zohar, Halachah, or any of a number of other Torah-related topics. As to what order they should be studied and which has primacy, the answer is that they all complement each other, but Torah, Talmud, and Halachah are usually stressed over other topics.Sincerely,
