Ask the Rabbi: answers from Project Genesis rabbis

When is the Sabbath?

Question

On which day is the Sabbath? I know that it is the seventh day of the week but I want to know how it appears on the Jewish calendar and how the days correspond with the calendar that we use today. Would it fall on Saturday everytime considering that we have more days in a year than the Jewish calendar? How would you calculate what day it is if it does not?

Answer

The Sabbath affirms the Biblical seven-day week of Creation, and thus comes
at the end of every seven days, regardless of calendar calculations. So
it is every Saturday, week in, week out – or more accurately, from Friday
sundown to Saturday sundown.

Given the difficulty of determining exactly when “sundown” is, we observe
from Friday sunset to Saturday’s nightfall, when stars come out.

Question

Is there more than one Sabbath in a week?

Answer

No. The Bible does refer to some of the Festivals such as Passover and Yom Kippur as a Sabbath but that only means that it is a sacred day of rest
