Ask the Rabbi: answers from Project Genesis rabbis

Number of laws?

Question

I would like to know how many laws/rules or regulations that an orthodox Jew was/is required to follow as stated in the Old Testament?

Answer

There are a total of 613 basic commandments [many with myriad details attached] that every Jew must adhere to. Nowadays that we don’t have the Holy Temple, a great many of them do not apply any longer but once the third temple will be built we will once again be required to fulfill those
commandments.
