It is my understanding that:
– The Ark lid weighed over a ton, notwithstanding the cherubim or the coffer itself, which was double-plated inside and out with gold.
– The Ark was transported by four men (Levites)
How four men could lift and transport the Ark?

The Talmud, Sotah 35a, states that the Ark carried those who carried it. Meaning, even though it appeared as though the members of the family of Kehot were carrying the Ark, in reality they were exerting no effort.
