My understanding of the issue in broad terms is this: The Egyptians rejected Hashem (G-d) and positioned themselves in the center of the world. They were the leaders, they could enslave their subjects, they could do whatever they pleased. Hashem showed them that He controls the world, by destroying their civilization, piece by piece.
