The Cherubs

Question

What is the significance of “cherubs” (KERUVIM)?

Answer

The “cherubs” in the Temple were exceptions to the usual rules against representational art. Some of the cherubs were embroidered (Ex.26:1,31; 36:8,35), but the ones on the cover of the Ark (Ex.25:18-20,37:7-9) were solid. There will also be cherubs in the Third Temple; see Ezekiel 41:17-26. Also, G-d is described as mounted on a cherub (2 Samuel 22:11), and cherubs also served as guardians of the Garden of Eden (see Gen.3:24; Ezekiel 28:14-16).
