Two Creation Narratives

Question

Does Genesis Chapters 1 & 2 tell the story of two creations (i.e. one spiritual and one physical)? If not, please explain the following:

A. Genesis 1:3 in contrast to Genesis 1:16;
B. Genesis 1:25-27 in contrast to Genesis 2:18-19;
C. Genesis 1:27-28 in contrast to Genesis 2:18-22;
D. And Genesis 2:18-19 in contrast to Genesis 1:24-28.

Answer

Thank you for your question.

If you read Rav Y. B. Soloveitchik’s “Lonely Man of Faith“, you will find an explanation of many of these apparently contradictory verses, which is similar to the solution you propose. Instead of contrasting the spiritual and the physical, he juxtaposes the individual/religious with the social/constructive (or similar terminology).

I suggest that you read that book, and I hope you will find the answers that you are looking for in it. (Of course, there are many other earlier answers to these apparent contradictions, and many books have been written on the subject. I am only suggesting the book I feel most appropriate for your specific question).
