Question
My congregation is engaged in a search for an Assistant Rabbi. The synagogue has lost a lot of money over the past year, and the President knows that it is most unlikely that we will, in fact, engage anyone to fill the vacancy. Is this considered to be sinful, misleading behavior?
Answer
Thank you for your question. If, in fact, they have no intention of hiring someone, that would be misleading. However, if they would hire the incumbent if the “price was right”, then there is nothing wrong with engaging in such a search.
Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler
