Caring for Those From Broken Homes

Question

Why does the Bible often say that people should be careful towards orphans and widows – but never mentions those people who grew up in a family in which the parents were divorced? Is G-d unconcerned with those people who come from broken homes?

Answer

It seems that there is a greater concern with widows and orphans inasmuch as these people have no one to stand up for them. The issue does not seem to be that these people are more sensitive, but rather that they lack protection. Therefore, G-d protects them via commandments to be more careful in dealing with the widow and orphan. Regarding divorce, however, although the children have gone through trauma, they still have a father to defend them. Nevertheless, it should also be understood that Jewish law does not allow us to hurt anyone’s feelings regardless of their circumstances.
