Can you give me some guidelines for choosing a wedding ring for a Jewish wedding?
Thank you for your questions. Technically, a person need not use a wedding ring at all to get married, but may use anything that has a minimal value. However, the custom has developed to use a ring. It is preferable that this ring be as simple as possible, with no stones or engravings on it. This is because it is easy to get confused regarding its value, and the bride must realize how much the ring is actually worth, and not think that it is worth more than it actually is. The size, shape and color are not relevant. It may actually be made out of any material, not necessarily gold, but it seems that a gold ring is the custom that has developed.
I hope that this has been somewhat helpful. There are many books – in all languages- written about the customs of getting married. You may want to consider purchasing or borrowing one of them.
Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler
