G-d’s Hidden Face

Question

I’m looking for information–preferably ancient–on the concept of God hiding His face. Any info on the eyes of God being closed to the suffering of His people.

Answer

The source for this concept is the following verse in Deuteronomy:

“And G-d said to Moses: You are about to die, and this Nation will rise up and stray after the gods of the foreigners of the Land it is entering and it will forsake Me and annul My covenant that I have sealed with them. My anger will flare against it on that day and I will forsake them; and I will conceal My face from them and they will become prey, and many evils and distresses will encounter it.” (Deut 31:16)

Thus, we see that G-d only ‘closes His eyes’ to the suffering of His people in response to their violation of the covenant He made with them.

Yours sincerely,
