Haredi Jews and iPods

Question

Can you tell me about Haredi Jews?

Answer

The word “Haredi” (or Charedi) means “trembling” and it refers to those Jews who adopt a scrupulous approach to the observance of the commandments. The term refers to their extra care not to violate the will of G-d.

How do they feel about technology, specifically iPods?

iPods would be acceptable if they are used exclusively for listening to inspirational music and lessons in Torah’s truths. Generally speaking Haredi Jews are suspicious of modern technology, and specifically modern media, because of the bad influences it brings into the world such as television and pornographic websites. While there have been many positive products of technology, like MRI’s and databases, negative products usually come along with the package (computer hacking, and advanced weapons in the hands of terrorists). First consider the pros and the cons of the advancement, and then take the most responsible course.
