I was also wondering is there a difference in the old testament in the King James Bible and the Torah? For example I have heard the story of Lilith as Adam’s first wife but that story is not mentioned in the Christian bible but from what I think I understand it is a story that Jews believe in.
The King James edition of the Bible is not a reliable translation and has Christianized various verses to better fit the agenda. You would be better off sticking with a Hebrew/English Chumash (bible) published by Artscroll or similar type of Chumash.
The story of Lilith is a Midrashic story. This is a complimentary resource to the bible and is not always meant to be taken literally. It is not always clear when these stories are meant to be factual or a parable for a lesson to be absorbed from the story line. Such is the case regarding the story of Lilith – some take it literally and some figuratively (hence, the room for interpretation that we discussed in the prior email). Either way Midrash often opens up whole new ways of understanding passages and between the lines story line for the Torah (bible). These aren’t the mere fantasizing of a bunch of rabbis from 2 millennia ago. They are sometimes straight forward messages other times they are complex esoteric and seemingly contradictory or otherwise. The serious student of Midrash is able to find deeper meaning and greater understanding. There are plenty of resources in English as well that help the reader without years of study under their belts peak into the world of Midrash.
