Gift for a Jewish Doctor

Question

I have a new Doctor who I know is Jewish. I would like to give him a small gift to express my gratitude and appreciation for his care in the recent months. May I give him a small gift or would that be considered improper? I have been looking into making a donation in his name to a Jewish charity (I like the idea of having a tree planted in his name in Jerusalem). Can you give me guidance?

Answer

All of your suggestions are quite appropriate. You might also consider giving him an attractively framed copy of Maimonides’s Prayer for Physicians which you might find in a Judaica store or online.
